01Overview

Light for Hope was a philanthropic project from SC Johnson’s Baygon brand and BBDO, delivered with ChildFund, to bring sustainable light and mosquito protection to children in rural developing countries. Rocket Wagon built the lanterns, with Luke leading the hardware. Deployed in the Apayao region of the Philippines—one of the most marginalized areas where families live without electricity—the project enabled children to study safely at home while protecting them from dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

02The challenge

In the Apayao region, hundreds of families in villages like Upper Atok and Calayucay live without access to electricity. Children do homework outside under streetlights, compromising their safety and education. The region faces high exposure to dengue-carrying mosquitoes, and 26% of elementary students in the Philippines don't reach sixth grade. Communities needed a solution that addressed both lighting and health concerns.

03The solution

Solar-powered lanterns with integrated LED lighting and mosquito repellant dispensing capabilities. Five villages received large solar panels at community centers and schools, capable of charging hundreds of lithium-ion batteries daily. The lanterns were engineered for durability and ease of use in challenging environments, with S.C. Johnson's Baygon technology providing mosquito protection.
